Questions to Ask an Immigration Attorney (And Our Answers!)

Questions for Attorneys

Do you specialize in visas and immigration?

YES! Immigration law is the main focus of our practice!

We practice both transaction immigration law (application, petitions, etc.) as well as immigration litigation (deportation defense, writs of mandamus, etc.).

Immigration is our passion and in our hearts. At two years old, our founding member, Paul “Woody” Scott, and his mother moved to New Orleans, Louisiana from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Attorney Sakeena Naqvi, the head of our employment immigration department, also has parents who are immigrants. In her onboarding interview (read here), Sakeena said that immigrants “inspire” her to do her job!

Are you a member of the American Lawyers Association (AILA)?

YES! We are proud members of AILA and Attorney Scott is also currently the local chapter President!

What procedures do you undertake to act on a client’s behalf?

We help clients navigate immigration issues and overcome immigration obstacles.

Specifically, we will start with an initial consultation where we will assess your specific situation and decide which visa is best for you. From there, we will help you to gather documents, complete the necessary forms, and prepare the application or petition to submit. We will monitor the status of your application/petition and help to ease your fears while you wait for the response.

If a request for additional evidence (RFE) is sent, we can help to respond to that. We will also help to prepare you for any interviews and walk with you as your advocate from start to finish.

How frequently will you be in contact?

We will be in contact with you throughout the process. You will have both an attorney and a paralegal specifically assigned to your case who will be there to answer your questions and help to ease your anxieties. You can expect to hear from us as often as necessary to process to case properly.

Do you speak languages in addition to English?

YES! The majority of our staff is fluent in English and Spanish and we also have staff fluent in Portuguese.

How long does the process take?

It is no secret that immigration can be a daunting process and recent years have not made the process any faster. Depending on which application/petition you are submitting, the timeline will vary.

However, the good news is that the attorneys at the Scott Law Firm will have you covered. We are aware of how long “normal” processing times are based on other visa applications, and if action needs to be taken, we specialize in writs of mandamus, which force USCIS or consulates to make a decision when the petition or application is taking an “unreasonable” amount of time.

What do you need from me?

You will be an important part of this process! We need documents and information from you so that we can best present your case to the government entity. Try to be as organized as possible and be sure to respond to all requests from your attorney and paralegal.
