Eligibility for Naturalization
In order to become a naturalized citizen of the U.S., you must meet the
- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of filing
- Be a legal permanent resident of the U.S.
- Have had the status of "legal permanent resident" in the country
for at least five years
If the applicant can fulfill all of the following criteria, the five-year
residency requirement can be reduced to three years:
- Acquired legal permanent resident status
- Has been married to or living with a citizen for the past three years
- His or her spouse has been a U.S. citizen for the past three years prior
to the applicant's filing
Additionally, the applicant must be physically present in the country for
at least 30 of the 60 months prior to filing. If the applicant qualifies
for the residency requirement reduction, he or she must be present for
at least 18 of the 36 months.
